The
Importance Of Organic Produce
Every day more people find out about the value
of eating organic produce and the hazards of eating produce that is grown in what is now known as
"conventional" farming. Products that are grown "conventionally" (or industrially) are grown using pesticides
and non-organic fertilizers that speed up growth and kill every living thing around the
plants.
This may make it easier to grow them, but it does not make it healthier to consume them. People who understand that
"you are what you eat" prefer organic foods that are grown without the use of deadly chemical fertilizers,
herbicides and pesticides.
These plants are grown using organic fertilizers and natural pest control, and in the grand scheme of things, they
are grown more efficiently. The chemical substances that are used in industrial farming damage the health of the
people who consume the products.
This is especially true of children who have not yet developed a mature immune system. Additionally, organic
produce is more nutritious than industrially grown produce. The main reason for this is that the speed of growth
forced by chemical fertilizers is unhealthy for the plants, themselves. They are not given proper nourishment, and
they are harvested too quickly, so they don’t have time or the nourishment they need to develop properly. The focus
is on harvesting one crop to replace it immediately with another.
Organic fertilizers don’t create unnatural and accelerated plant growth. With organic methods, plants mature
naturally and are harvested at the proper level of maturity. They absorb more nutrients from soil that has not been
overused and poisoned with chemicals. Organic produce gains its nourishment from natural earth, the sun, and clean
water. Therefore, organic produce is better for the health of the consumer.
Unfortunately, organic produce is expensive because it takes longer to mature and is more labor intensive. It also
takes more soil to grow organic produce because there is not an accelerated turnover rate. Therefore it is more
costly than industrially produced fruit and vegetables. The increase in price varies from one product to another,
but sometimes, organic produce costs twice the amount of industrially produced fruits and
vegetables.
However, there are some types of organic produce that are only a few cents more than their industrially produced
counterparts. It pays to select these products whenever possible. In the long run, selecting organic produce will
save you money. The higher nutritional value and lack of deadly chemicals will boost your health level and your
immune system and save you doctor bills. In the short term, you will probably feel more satisfied when eating
organic produce, so you will be likely to eat less, so the immediate expense may be the same as with industrial
produce. All in all, organic produce gives you more for your money.
